On A Serious Note...

With all the terrible things that happen in the news, one item really pissed me off. During this weekend's Kentucky Derby, a horse named Eight Belles broke both front ankles and had to be euthanized shortly after the conclusion of the race. Animal Rights groups are now lashing out at the jockey and calling for him to be held responsible.

I am not as outlandish as PETA, but a horse doesn't arbitrarily break it's front two ankles. Obviously this horse went through some sort of rigorous training. To push an animal (who doesn't have a say in the matter) to it's death because of a stupid race is a crime in my book.

Seriously.

I agree Liz, that made me so upset about the horse. I refuse to go to the racetrack. I have a friend who is a horse trainer, she told me they end up killing most of the horses after their racing days because they are so amped and crazy from their training. It is sickening.

I digress Liz. It's a multi-million dollat business and athletes just like horses break bones. However, when a horse breaks one, it's usually irrevocable due to the healing process.

I grew up in KY and my grandparents raised race horses, so I'm biased, but they raise them to race and if they can't race then they are million $ burdens lol as bad as that sounds... but it happens all the time, it's just not as publicized. So I guess it just didn't shock me.

Regardless, it's a multi-million dollar business that physically pushes horses to the limit. Running is the same, but a person chooses whether they can run, a horse cannot.

Actually, a lot the horses enjoy racing. I worked on a horse farm for retired race horses and they had damn good lives. Breeding and eating.

It was terrible though and they should really take better care of the horses. You can slap a horse with a crop all you want and it won't make them run on a broken ankles.
